NATURAL LA TATACOA
La Tatacoa Natural History Museum has the first paleontological research laboratory in the department of Huila and the second in Colombia; our museum is the only one that includes within our guided tour the entrance to the laboratory facilities where you can live an unforgettable experience seeing collections of insects, holotype fossils (first known fossil sample of a species) and fossil specimens being studied and that have not yet been published in international scientific journals.
Among the activities carried out in the Valerie Anders Paleontological Research Laboratory are:
- Temporary storage and preservation of fossils
- Fossil preparation: cleaning, consolidation and reintegration. Manual processes with dental tools and instruments; mechanical processes with pressurized micro-percutters; chemical procedures: consolidation, crust dissolution, use of solvent chemicals.
- Creation of fossil replicas with materials such as silicones, resins, fiberglass, plaster, pigments, etc.
- Assembly of actual animal skeletons by means of metal supports and structures.
- Drying, washing and sieving of sediments for the extraction of microfossils.
- Identification, separation and study of microfossils under the stereo microscope. Preparation and mounting of the pieces.
- Photography and scientific image. Macrophotography, microphotography and graphics of the fossil pieces under study.
