Research
The La Tatacoa Natural History Museum has a team of researchers and collaborators from different Colombian and foreign universities and institutions who are currently studying the specimens and the processes that gave rise to the fossils of the Tatacoa Desert.
Much of the research is being led by colombian paleontologists who are working in collaboration with experts from other countries. Currently different projects are being developed on fishes, snakes, marsupials, caimans, primates and mammals, and the results will be published in prestigious scientific journals at the service of all paleontology enthusiasts.
The La Tatacoa Natural History Museum has several collections, being the paleontological collection the largest one. It also has a biological, osteological, archaeological, geological, cactus and ancient objects collection.
Each of these collections has a database and an internal card with the record of each specimen. Researchers and students from different branches of science can access these materials by requesting permission to study the piece of their interest. They have to submit a form (the link below) that would be evaluated by the museum team to verify that they are not assigned to an ongoing research.
Loan specimens may also be requested for studies that require analysis in specialized laboratories in another country. For this request, a permit form must be filed with the museum and then permits must be requested from the Colombian Geological Service in order to take the specimen out of the country and ensure the return of the piece to its place of origin.
